Bitcoin is lame again.
When I tell people I’m analyzing Bitcoin sentiment, I’m met with the kind of look usually reserved for a grown man asking if you’d like to see the model-train setup in his basement.
But despite the negative initial reaction, these moments often fill me with a renewed conviction in the orange coin. The contrarian in me cannot help but to view these moments as anti-signals.
It may sound stupidly simple, but historically, when Bitcoin is “cool”, it is a very dangerous time to buy.
When Bitcoin is “lame”, it’s historically quite bullish.
And Bitcoin is VERY lame right now.
But if you know my work, you’ll know that I don’t just say this in passing. I say this because I've analyzed the language around these topics so we can get a window into the current state of investor psychology.
What I’ve found is that people are bored and growing more interested in more exciting narratives.
And that boredom is precisely what makes me so bullish.
TLDR:
Bitcoin Traders are using much more fearful language than the rest of Bitcoin.
These short-term investors are latching onto the AI and quantum trade at a growing rate.
This (unsurprisingly) is happening during a historically compressed volatility regime and alongside a collapse in price-prediction activity.
Traders Gonna Trade
This chart lets us compare the amount of fearful language Bitcoin Traders (orange line) are using with the rest of the Bitcoin ecosystem (blue line). The bottom section shows the gap in fearful language between the two groups over time.
The Bitcoin Traders are more fearful than they’ve been in over three years… including the bottom in 2022, the summer chop, and countless other examples.
Long-time readers will know that I really like watching this cohort.
“Why?”
Because Bitcoin Traders are distinctly different from HODLers.
These are individuals who publicly make price predictions and buy/sell Bitcoin based on their current view of the market. Because of this, it’s especially interesting to contrast them against the moods and narratives of the broader Bitcoin ecosystem.
What do they talk more about?
What moods does their language overindex on?
These are particularly interesting questions to ask because these individuals have a much shorter time horizon.
This is in stark contrast to the HODLers who view the orange coin as some ethereal being sent down from the heavens to save us from the evils of fiat money (respect). These people might get fearful and wrapped up in the present narrative, but only a small number of them rage-quit every cycle.
Traders, on the other hand, very frequently get scared and distracted.
Which is exactly what we are seeing now.
Traders' language is growing more fearful, while at the same time, they’re getting more interested in narratives totally outside the Bitcoin space.
Just look at how much they talk about AI.
This chart shares similar themes to the one before, but this time it analyzes narratives.
It shows how much both groups talk about AI and illustrates the difference, or “spread,” between them.
Traders have consistently talked about AI at a higher rate, but over the last few weeks it’s made its most aggressive move upwards. The highest difference in the mention rate of AI between these two groups over this time frame.
When looked at by itself, I don’t know that I’d read too much into this data point.
This is a relatively small change, and AI is a fundamental shift in how humanity interfaces with computers. Not to mention it’s the trade that’s attracted most of the fast money.
But that’s not the only narrative.
Even things like “quantum” are drawing more Bitcoin Trader attention.
This chart uses the same structures and patterns as the one before, and I find it interesting for a couple of reasons.
Because it shows that narratives can be contextual.
It may illustrate where the short money is looking next.
Make sense?
“No. Not at all. What does narratives being contextual even mean?”
Fair question.
Look at that big blue spike in late 2025.
That wasn’t Bitcoiners suddenly being really interested in the quantum trade. That was a flash of concern as quantum computing threat narratives peaked around Bitcoin.
That’s very different from the orange spike that’s happening now.
In my opinion, traders are getting more interested in the quantum trade because they're searching for the next AI trade. I’m seeing more whispers of this narrative on the timeline, and it’s often framed like this.
I think this is why attention share is increasing.
Again, this is interesting because these people are traders who are frequently talking about the Bitcoin space. But they are not exclusively into Bitcoin. They like to trade around these different narratives, and quantum is starting to become interesting… and so is AI… all while Bitcoin is super boring.
Coincidence?
Or is this exactly what you would expect to happen around bottoming ranges where Bitcoin volatility is insanely compressed, and most people have stopped caring about the price?
“How can you possibly say that people have stopped caring about the price?”
Oh.
Because I literally measured it.
This chart can be a trip if it’s the first time you’ve seen it, but bear with me because I think it’s one of the most interesting ones I reference.
This lets us visualize how frequently people have mentioned Bitcoin price targets using a heatmap.
The higher the density, the “hotter” the color.
Note the bright red when we first broke through $100k in 2024. This was the most frequently discussed price level.
Although people still talk about these ranges now, it’s become less interesting, hence the “cooler” colors.
I share this because of the lack of data both above and below current ranges. You can see there were a lot of $200k price predictions for a while, both in the bear market and in the bull market. You can also see a lot of 40k price ranges earlier in this bear, but price predictions even to the downside have cooled off really rapidly recently.
This isn’t particularly surprising to me, since Bitcoin's volatility is so incredibly low right now.
And I hope this helps you see why I wanted to cover Bitcoin Traders today. Because these are the people who pay the most attention to price action. And reading between the lines, I personally believe they are losing interest and shifting into positions with more volatility and intrigue.
“This sounds super bearish. Bitcoin is boring like gold now.”
Nope.
I disagree.
I actually perceive this as bullish because it suggests we have removed a lot of the short-term money, and the persistent buyers of Bitcoin are the ones primarily driving this market.
So What’s the Next Narrative?
This is the question I’ve been asked more than any other.
“What do you think the next narrative will be?”
And I’ll cut right to the chase.
I don’t know.
Often, price starts to move, and only in hindsight do we assign it as the reason. People like to look back at bear markets as if it was incredibly obvious when sentiment and narratives shifted, and things started moving back up.
But this isn’t at all how it feels in the moment.
It’s messy.
It’s convoluted.
We could have bottomed already, and with each passing day, that outcome becomes more likely. We could also have a wild macro-economic news item break that forces us to have one of the worst flush-outs in Bitcoin history.
I cannot predict the future better than anyone else.
But there are signs that can help us understand when the odds of having reached the bottom increase. Some of these signs can be technical price levels, institutional inflows, or signs of seller exhaustion.
These are brilliant signals, but they’re not the ones I can offer unique insight into.
The thing I can show is exactly what we’ve dwelled on today. Folks who often trade Bitcoin on the margins are talking more about AI and quantum stocks than they have in quite some time. They’re growing less interested in Bitcoin in the exact way you would typically expect around bottoming ranges.
Does this mean we explode to the upside soon?
No idea.
What it does mean is that this is yet another confirming signal that we have reached the point in this cycle where short-term money has exited and is now looking at other things.
If you’ve been here before, you know exactly how important this information can be.
If you haven’t been here before… I’d recommend that you stick around.
I think you might enjoy what comes next.
P.S. If your work involves understanding the psychology of a particular market, audience, or investor base, feel free to reply. I’d love to hear what questions you’re trying to answer and see whether this kind of analysis could be useful to you.

I don't know where you got that Bitcoin price mention heatmap or maybe you made it yourself but it is excellent. I usually use my friend as a timing mechanism based on what he posts from Instagram about investments in our thread. He has no idea he's the best contrarian indicator I know of since he's the aggregator of the mass investment mindset. People make predictions about an investment going higher when something starts to get oversold since they want the clicks. That's a great insight you have.
and just like that, bitcoin up 5%
you gotta love it.
